I wish / If only

wishとIf onlyは願望や感情を表現するために使われます。 wish, if onlyは単純過去、過去完了形、could、wouldと共に使用され、それぞれ意味がことなります。

wish/if only + 単純過去

現実の状態と違っていればいいのになぁという気持ちを表す
I wish I had a better job!
別の仕事をしていればなぁ。
If only he spoke better German!

wish/if only + 過去完了形

過去の出来事、やってしまったことに対する後悔や希望を表す

(現在の状況に関して)不可能なことを知っていて言う

in a bid to は「~するために」「~しようとして」を意味するidiomです。
他のidiomで言い換えると、in order to が使えます。

Example
